The opening session of the FLTA orientation at Penn gives the participants an introduction to Communicative Language Teaching (CLT) with a brief view of methods and approaches that preceded it in the past, and current extensions of CLT. This version from 2007 was prepared by Nelleke van Deusen-Scholl (then Director of the PLC and now Director of the Yale Language Center) with some input from MaryAnn Julian (formerly of the English Language Programs at Penn).
