All new Foreign Language Teaching Assistants are required to attend a week-long orientation session held the last week of August before classes begin. All part- and full-time lecturers who are new to Penn are also required to attend all or part of the orientation. After many years of trying different options, the schedule here for 2007 seems to have achieved an optimal balance between large group sessions, and smaller language-specific sessions. We also have found that participants are eager to see experienced instructors teach, so we include numerous mini-lessons, both live and videotaped. The participants are asked to do two micro-teaching sessions, one in mixed-language groups, and the other with only participants teaching the same language. The latter is videotaped for discussion.
